My Basic Wardrobe Essentials

If you haven’t already noticed, basics are a huge trend today. A simple basic white t-shirt can transition through all the seasons. Investing in these pieces in your wardrobe is a definite must. As they say you can never go wrong with it. A $75 Alexander Wang black tee or an Acne Studios basic tee may be too much for my spending but if you’re more than willing to pay for a good name brand then go for it. Simply put, you need whites and blacks in your wardrobe. Here are some of my basic wardrobe essentials to help you guide to achieve a well-balanced closet!

You can never go wrong with a simple black t-shirt. It can easily go chic just by wearing a decent pair of jeans and an outerwear of your choice. When stumbled upon a situation where you don’t have abundant time to build around a look just throw on a black/white tee and that should cover it. Same is true with women’s. A T-shirt can transition from a casual look to an evening look with proper styling.

Even if this is untrue, I still will be investing in good denim pieces. It’s one of those versatile pieces that you can easily wear. It’s an everyday essential. I own two pairs of black and indigo coloured skinny jeans from ASOS which I wear to death! It’s those things that you just want to wear every single time even if you have a ton more in your closet.

It can either be a pair of Oxfords, a brogue shoe or a pair of boots. When you have one or two of these, you can sit back and worry not. These can easily be paired with almost anything in your wardrobe specifically when you have black. I prefer this Oxfords from Dr. Martens. When you have this in your closet, you are safe. It’s like taking a broad spectrum antibiotic, it easily covers most microorganism. You can dress it up and dress it down. But wearing Dr. Martens is usually uncomfortable when new, you need ample time to break them in or just use them frequently so they mould in your foot well.

Investing in a quality outerwear like a navy blazer from is a wardrobe essential. It is one of those articles of clothing that helps translate your outfit to look dressier and more formal. But between a choice of leather jacket or a blazer, I will prefer a leather jacket. With this kind of outerwear, it provides more insulation during cold seasons and apart from making an outfit look edgy it also makes a great accent piece to a simple casual outfit.

One accessory that I only or mostly wear is a watch. When wearing this, it easily makes you look smart and dressed up. This is my dream watch. A Rolex. You don’t need to say more.

When wearing a pair of black trousers, your socks need to also be of the same colour. This is a rule in formal menswear. But when going casual, printed socks are more fun to use but that will depend on your mood or style.

Also, a fine leather belt or any kind is also a must in your wardrobe. It fixes fit issues with your pants or give your outfit a boost by tucking in your shirt and show off your Hermes belt.

Dressing up does not mean buying fancy clothes and bragging what you have. Personally, being smart about your choices makes everything. Investing in expensive trendy pieces is not ideal for me. One day it’s in, and the next day it’s out of style. But it’s always up to you. I won’t stop you if can’t fall asleep after you deprived yourself of something. As they say, if can’t stop thinking about it. Buy it!

Style Spotting: Menswear

Lookbook has been one of my encyclopedia of style inspiration. Be it womenswear and menswear. Lookbook is a perfect reflection of style of people all over the globe so it’s great to get inspired by if you’re feeling rusty with your style or literally when you’re running out of style. Here are some of my recent favourite looks from the guys of Lookbook!

Philippe G. is a Swizterland-based lifestyle blogger. I have always been a fan of his sleek and clean style and this look made that more harder(what? a harder fan? Lol). This #OOTD definitely has that sophistication and easiness. The jacket has the perfect fit.

Patrick P., a Copenhagen-based fashion blogger took his style into the sporty edgy page of the style bible. Wouldn’t have thought to use those slip ons with a look but he sure brought it to the next level.

Tyler G. is a US-based Superhero as he described himself.  And absolutely knows the word expensive. From an Acne Studios shorts to his Balenciaga boots, he gave these brands a run for their money. I love this look. Though it’s not my cup of tea, but it’s a look that I will be willing to get a spin on.

A Quick Self-made Guide to Online Shopping

Retail stores are popping everywhere. And to reach their target markets even more, online shops have been established. Forever21, H&M, Topman, Topshop, Cotton On,  Zara are among the retail merchandising moguls in retail world of fashion. They’ve all have branched out into online stores. Meanwhile, ASOS is one of the top online clothing retail stores that does not have a physical store.  ASOS, Urban Outfitters and Cotton On are my choice of stores since I live in the Southern Hemisphere(We don’t have Zara, H&M and Forever21 online stores). All have good reputation to customers.

If you are into the affordable fashion, there is Aliexpress where you can purchase items with free shipping. The items are reasonably priced but of good quality too.  I thought that their selling point is their free shipping but it usually takes like 3 weeks to a month if I order from them. So, if you really need an item from the site you have to order it ahead of time, like a month in advance.

Customer service

ASOS also ships quickly and they have excellent customer service. I must add. I tweeted a little rip from a trousers that I bought from them and they instantly responded and sent me away a new pair. That awesome. Also, follow the social media accounts of these retailers. Customer service is so much more convenient and swift using this like thru Twitter or Facebook.

Coupon codes

Be mindful also that these stores hold their sales too. So keep an eye for coupon codes they give away for instant discounts to get the most out of your money. I mostly get coupon codes from ASOS, Urban Outfitters and Cotton On when they have promos or sale. Just a tip: it sometimes pays off to wait for the sale. I bought a pair of skinny jeans from ASOS in full price then few days after they announced a 30% off sale. That broke my heart.

Bogus sellers

You just have to be picky with some sellers. As there are horror stories of people not getting their products but with my experience I got them in one piece(LOL). For instance, if you are shopping in Aliexpress or Ebay, be sure to check the feedback rating. If I see a feedback rating of less than 95%, usually I dig deeper into the customer comments and decide from there. I have never experienced a bogus seller yet so being meticulous pays off.

Using Paypal gives me security when shopping online. When a dispute happens it can mediate or settle kinds of problems with payment or with the seller. Online safety and security is key as well. You don’t want any penny fall off that pocket of yours.

Online shopping has made some of our busy live more bearable but keeping in mind to put the pedal where it’s due. This can really get addicting if you don’t know your limits. Take it from me!

Button Down For What?

After reading an article on the Man Repeller blog, I got inspired to do a post about styling button downs. I thought that since I have a bunch of button downs laying around my closet, I really don’t have much idea on how to style it more other than just layering it with a jacket. So I picked up on those pieces that they featured on the site.

23_04_Tommy-Ton-Spring-2015-RTW  This is so simple and effortless looking. The fabrics worked so well together. I may not know what fabrics these are but I want to have one for myself. I just really love this. It feels so soft and comfortable just by looking at this photo. Looks effortlessly chic.

This is all about layering, a play on textures and prints. Being playful and taking some risks pays off sometimes so give it a go and it might work.

via-la-garconneI am into tailored looks. I haven’t thought of layering anything longer than this tailored shirt. Quite simply, it worked for this look!

viaaloveisblindWith this last look, I remember trying this when I started blogging in 2012. I button up the first few holes and let the rest lay as it is. I was surprised that throwing on different outerwears into this look didn’t look frumpy and bulky. She used different lengths and cuts here. So that’s the hint, play on different lengths to be able to get this look.

Now, we got more tips and tricks on how to get around button downs or button ups. Say bye bye to the regular look!

The Style Must Go On Prelude

For months, I have been brainstorming with myself with what domain name I have to go with. I had an awakening this morning for a name of my website which I have been on a hunt in almost 6 months.  Today, when I woke up this morning a voice whispered to me in dragon breath: The Style Must Go On! I said to myself this is it. The decision in having a website is a brave step for myself partnered with a huge responsibility as well. I will be committed to give you style updates in every walk of life. On my previous blog, I focused on menswear but this time I shall take on womenswear, arts and entertainment as well to get everything covered.

This will get me going until and after I reach New York. To my readers, come and join me in our new home. Even if life strikes so hard on us, The Style Must Go On!
